Limpsfield Life – February Update: News & What’s On

It’s February, month of love, international rugby and a few glimpses of spring amongst the chilly mornings. The daffs and snowdrops are out at St Peter’s – a true indication of brighter days ahead (until they’re covered in snow!!!). It’s a crucial month for wildlife, so check out our tips and actions for this month, and make a note of the events and goings-on as ever, PLUS some great news for Kate Tulett… Happy February!

How to Help Wildlife this February

February is a crucial month for wildlife and there’s lots you can do to help. To help, focus on providing high-fat foods (suet, sunflower seeds) for birds, maintaining ice-free water sources, and cleaning nest boxes for the upcoming breeding season. Protect hibernating hedgehogs by checking bonfires/leaf piles before moving them and create sheltered, untidy spots for insects.

Key February Wildlife Actions

  • Feed the Birds: Provide high-calorie, fat-rich foods like suet, peanuts, and sunflower seeds to help them survive cold nights.
  • Water Supply: Ensure birds and mammals have access to water by melting ice on bird baths or ponds with hot water (do not crack the ice).
  • Nest Boxes: Clean out old bird boxes for the new season and put up new ones (National Nestbox Week starts Feb 14th). The Woodhouse Centre has all you need (open mornings Monday to Friday opposite Tandridge Leisure Centre)
    • Swift Boxes are great to put up now ahead of the swifts arrival – sheltered, north facing wall with no obstructions for fledgling flyers!
  • Protect Hibernators: Check compost heaps and log piles for hibernating hedgehogs and toads before gardening.
  • Garden Care: Leave dead, hollow-stemmed plants standing to provide homes for insects. Get your hedges trimmed back this month then leave them for birds March to September.

NOTE: It’s frog-spawning time so don’t forget to pop up to the High Chart’s Yalden Spring late Feb to catch some Frog Fest action! See the Friends of Limpsfield Common website for more info on this annual display!

Arts Award Accreditation for Kate Tulett

Congratulations to our local art teacher extraordinaire, Kate Tulett, whose Art 4 All studio has been accredited as an official Arts Award Centre, allowing young people to gain a nationally recognised creative qualification right here in Limpsfield.

The Arts Award is a flexible qualification for young people aged 11–25, ideal for those not taking GCSE Art or who would prefer to work at their own pace. Participants are encouraged to explore their own creative interests, selecting projects that reflect their abilities and ambitions, while receiving guidance and support throughout.

The Award’s flexibility is one of its greatest strengths. Students can work independently or follow guided projects, with Bronze, Silver and Gold levels available. It is particularly well suited to home-educated students or those not in full-time education, offering the opportunity to develop artistic skills while building a portfolio that showcases individual strengths.

Arts Award sessions take place weekly on Wednesday afternoons from 1pm at Kate Tulett’s studio in Limpsfield Village, with additional sessions planned from September. For more information or to book a place, visit www.katetulettart.com or contact Kate on 07815 918511.
