August has a wonderful way of encouraging us to slow down a little. Whether you’re entertaining children during the school holidays, catching up with friends or simply making the most of a sunny evening, we’re incredibly lucky to have so much on our doorstep.
Perhaps spend a lazy afternoon watching cricket at Grub Street or Chart Cricket ground with a cold drink in hand? A walk across the Chart followed by lunch or a chilled glass of something in The Carpenters’ fantastic beer garden is hard to beat on a summer’s day, while Botley Farmhouse and the Titsey Taproom are both perfect spots for a relaxed sundowner after a walk up Titsey Hill.
If you’re looking for something to keep the children occupied, why not complete the Hidden Treasure Trail around the town, with certificates available from the library (Tuesday-Saturday)?
Fancy getting a little closer to nature? Wander around the beautiful gardens at Titsey Place before treating yourself to coffee and cake in the tearoom; take the children on a nature-spotting adventure across Limpsfield Common using the downloadable wildlife spotter sheets from the Friends of Limpsfield Common or Limpsfield Surrey websites.
For a bigger day out, the National Trust’s Chartwell and Emmetts Garden are always favourites, as are Hever Castle and Penshurst Place. And don’t miss the Edenbridge & Oxted Show over the August Bank Holiday (30 & 31 August). Even if you live in the countryside, it’s not every day you get this close to magnificent Shire horses, working sheepdogs, prize-winning livestock and some seriously impressive farm machinery!
Friends of Limpsfield Common Update
Some bittersweet news is our fantastic National Trust Ranger, India, moves on to a new role at Leith Hill. During her year in Limpsfield she has worked tirelessly alongside volunteers and residents on projects including Yalden Spring, heathland restoration, improved footpaths and securing funding for future improvements.
India summed it up beautifully: “The community here has welcomed me with open arms, and I’ve been deeply impressed by the connection, coordination and shared passion for caring for both people and nature.”
Whilst we’ll miss her enormously, we’re delighted she’ll be staying within the National Trust family and wish her every success. In the meantime, local resident and National Trust Surrey Hills Facilities Manager, Mark Richards, will support the Task Force until a new ranger is appointed.
There’s even more good news, as the Friends of Limpsfield Common’s CIL funding bid has been approved. This means work can now begin on exciting projects including improvements around the Air Raid Shelters, a new Heritage and WWII Trail, path improvements and the ongoing rejuvenation of Yalden Spring.
A huge thank you also goes to everyone who volunteered at Chart Fair or supported the Friends by buying one of the popular nest box kits. Missed out? Don’t worry — instructions for making your own are available on the Friends’ website.
The Friends of Limpsfield Common Annual Public Meeting takes place on Saturday 12 September (11.30am-1.30pm), and everyone is welcome.
Pick a little litter… enjoy a little reward!
Fancy doing something good for the village while meeting a few friendly faces? The new Limpsfield Litter Angels’ “Pick n’ Pint (or Prosecco)” takes place on the second Saturday of every month.
Meet outside The Bull Inn at 10.30am on 8 August (all equipment provided), spend an hour helping to keep our village and surrounding area looking its best, then head back for an optional, well-earned drink afterwards.

Dinosaurs take over Limpsfield!
One date worth putting in the diary is Saturday 22 August, when our wonderful community will be swapping everyday clothes for dinosaur costumes!
The Bull Inn’s Charity Dino Walk is raising money for Shooting Star Children’s Hospices in support of local youngster Shea and other families facing incredibly difficult circumstances. The 6K walk starts and finishes at The Bull before everyone returns for a fun afternoon of fundraising, community spirit and, hopefully, lots of smiling dinosaurs.
If you can spare a donation or simply come along to cheer everyone on, your support will be hugely appreciated.

If you remember Chicory Tip’s Son of My Father reaching No.1 in 1972, you’ll definitely enjoy our bank holiday entertainment! Back by popular demand, Chicory Tip will be playing on Saturday afternoon 2-5pm in our secluded beer garden, a proper suntrap. The beers will be flowing and Billy our Chef will be tending to the BBQ from 1pm.
