One of the perfect places to spend a Summer’s afternoon is the Royal British Legion at Grub Street, Limpsfield. This hidden gem has been part of Limpsfield life for around 80 years and is in a truly lovely location, on the edge of the Grub Street cricket pitch (home to Oxted & Limpsfield Cricket Club) and overlooking the common, Limpsfield CofE Infants School and the Limpsfield Chart Golf Club.
There is a cricket match pretty much every Saturday afternoon from May onwards (British weather permitting!) and often on Sundays too. It’s a lovely place to stop after a walk or just to sit in the sunshine with a pint and a packet of crisps, while watching the wickets fall. Bring the dog too – it’s very pet-friendly!
With well-priced drinks, including a selection of great ciders and real ales, a good selection of snacks, sandwiches, rolls and sweets, the club is also a great place for lunch, with a varied menu created by chef, Bill Nicholas, Sunday roast and a much sought-after Sunday cheese board!
Managed by Julie Gates and run by a club committee, this very friendly and laid-back local is also the regular host of the local rotary meetings (Tuesdays) and Bridge mornings (Wednesdays); has a snooker hall, skittles alley, darts and even bingo!
The ‘Limpsfield Legion’ is great for all the family, with all the common and woods outside to play in for the older kids, plus a secure children’s play area for the little ones. It even has a Boules (pétanque) court – which has regular Boules mornings throughout the year. There’s also the added bonus of a big car park!
Aside from all the regular activities, the club has two separate rooms available for private parties, wakes and meetings and hosts live music on the last Sunday of the month and a jam session/open mic every first Thursday. Hire for the hall is £100 for members £200 for non members +£250 deposit returnable after the event.
Why not support the Royal British Legion and take out a membership?
As part of the Royal British Legion, the Limpsfield club is a members club (but also open to non-members) with an annual subscription of £17, £15 of which goes to the national body the Royal British Legion; £1 goes to the local branch of the national body and £1 is retained by the RBL Club itself to help provide the facilities. Membership year starts in October. If you’re interested, call or email the club on the details below or just ask at the bar.
