Everything starts with a seed and we want to be part of the seed swap revolution, helping to increase biodiversity of plants and flowers in our local area, one seed at a time. So we’ve launched the Limpsfield Community Seed Swap Scheme.

What you need to do:

  1. Collect an envelope from our box at Memorial Stores or Detillens Corner (Limpsfield Biodiversity Corner)
  2. Fill it with seeds (see how to collect seeds below). The best time to collect sees is June to October/November.
  3. Bring your seed packets to our Seed Swap Sundays – 2nd and 9th March, 10am to 12pm. – at the old bus shelter near the end of Detillens Lane (roundabout end). Swap your packets for someone else’s.

You can find some great information from the RHS on how to collect and store seeds, here: https://www.rhs.org.uk/propagation/seed-collecting-storing

  • Collect on a dry sunny day – late summer to late autumn – when seed heads have turned from green to brown and are dry but not shrivelled
  • Use a wooden bowl and gently shake or rub the seed pods to allow the seeds to fall out
  • Pop each collection into a paper bag or envelope (not plastic because this causes the seeds to sweat and go mouldy) and label each envelope
  • Store in a cool, dark dry cupboard or drawer in your house where they’ll be safe from insects, invertebrates and rodents!

As we get going, we’ll be adding more information, tips, ideas and successes (and failures!), along with news on any seed swap events.
