Limpsfield Chart in History – new book

Limpsfield Chart in History – a fascinating new full colour, illustrated book (including maps) that documents the history of Limpsfield Chart and the surrounding area – is now available for purchase.

Back in 1976, local amateur historian, Beryl Withers gave a fascinating illustrated talk on the history of Limpsfield Chart at St Andrews Hall in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the building of St Andrews Church.

Beryl, who came to live on the Chart in 1953 became very interested in researching the history of the area. For her talk in 1976, which became the first of many that she gave over many years, she gathered together a wide range of photographs, maps, prints and other artefacts to illustrate the her presentation.

Almost 50 years later, her talk forms the basis of the new book, with additional content by her son Nick Withers and Christopher Pendred. Together with historic photos from the personal collections of Charlie Jarrett and Charlie Hayward, amongst others.

The book includes a copy of the historic 1840 Tithe Map and associated Book of Apportionment, plus additional maps and a guided 3-mile trail walk, is just short o 100 pages or fascinating information, stories, postcards, maps and plans.

  • 1840 Tithe Map of Limpsfield Parish, folded and packed in a slipcase with the book.
  • Tithe Apportionment Booklet – Showing land ownership, the occupier, size, in 1840.
  • 1869 First Edition Ordnance Survey Map – of Limpsfield Chart
  • 1869 First Edition Ordnance Survey Map – From Limpsfield Village through Oxted, Old Oxted and on to Godstone.
  • Grid Map – Showing ‘Field Use’ on Limpsfield Chart in 1840, with images and text to identify and locate points of historical interest.
  • Guided Trail Walk Leaflet – A three mile walk over Limpsfield Chart with a full colour map and points of interest en route.

All profits from the sale of the book will be donated to The Friends of Limpsfield Common in support of their work on The Chart.
